Tip of the Day #288: Easy Pancakes while Camping

Does your family go camping?? How about adding pancakes to the mix!! When preparing to leave your home, just fill baggies with the batter, tie off the end and when you are ready, just snip the small ends to use as a piping bag and you are ready to cook! :)

    1. This could be done by just putting in the pancake mix with powdered milk. Then when you want to make pancakes just add water.

    3. What's to go bad? How many days are you camping for....2-3? Great and easy for that first breakfest on site.....ready quick and little mess....use for a fast and tasty evening meal the first night on site.....save for the 2nd or 3rd day.....should keep as well as any other cold loving items that you brought along.

  3. That sounds clever. However, pancake batter can only sit out for an hour before going bad, and only is safe to keep in the refrigerator for 24-36 hours. I would think it would keep less as long in a cooler. You have to measure the time from when the batter was made, travel to your camp site until you serve it.

    We generally complete our food prep the day before we leave to camp, and then drive 4-6 hours. That's 24 hours right there, and we haven't even set up camp.

    This might be a good idea if you are going to have a pancake breakfast for a birthday party and you are making lots of pancakes. Even then, you'd have to clean up the bowls anyway. Clever, but probably one to go back to the drawing board.

    For the commenter who said "just add water on site" - I don't see how that would help as you can't really stir in a pastry bag.

  6. Can it be prepared and then frozen immediately- then when you get there you can thaw it? Or would that make the batter taste gross

    1. I've bought frozen pancake batter out of the freezer section at grocery stores. That would be a fantastic idea and It didn't even dawn on me. The frozen batter I purchased was expensive in comparison to this option. I'm going to test it out. Great idea!

  7. We used powdered milk and powdered egg replacer then just add water at the campsite.

  8. I would mix all dry ingredients and then just add water the morning I wanted to make pancakes. Pancake batter is best used as soon as you mix for lighter rising pancakes. The longer the wait the flatter the pancake. If I have batter left after serving I go ahead and make the rest of the pancakes and after cooling I put in a plastic baggie and either put in refrigerator for next day or freeze for next week.

  9. Pancake batter has double acting baking powder in in. It expands when water hits it, then again when heated, Preparing this in advance will negate the first effect and your pancakes will be flat. How much time does it really save anyway?
